Carl’s Jr. may be predominantly in Western and Southwestern United States, but they are still the 5th largest fast food company in size behind Subway, McDonald’s, Burger King, and Wendy’s.

This company started out like many American Dream stories from the past.  Carl and Margaret Karcher borrowed $311 against their Plymouth automobile in 1941 with plans to purchase a hot dog cart.  They did well with that first cart and within no time expanded to 4 different hot dog carts.  In about 5 years, they were able to open their first restaurant that featured hamburgers on the menu.  This location in Anaheim, CA was named Carl’s Drive-In Barbecue.
